Lunchtime atop a Skyscraper, by Charles C. Ebbets We’re undergoing some design changes here at T-Sides while we ramp up for our relaunch. Don’t mind the mess. In the meantime, read our new Statement of Purpose, and please check back on April 4th, when our design changes will be finished, and we’ll have entirely new content!

Andy Goldsworthy, Cairn Consider the following points as our Statement of Purpose. T-Sides intends to explore and examine these thoughts in particular, but most importantly, these are simply interests, not rules or restrictions. Above all, T-Sides aims to capture the real cultural experience, and in doing so, there can be no rules. Just the mind, as it is. 1. Art and Culture are not only experienced as they are new. In just the last day, I’ve covered a handful of different decades. I’ve read Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller (1930s), watched Reality Bites (1990s), and listened to Neil Young’s On The Beach (1970s). However, arts and culture are primarily discussed only as they are new. It usually takes some sort of “anniversary” or re-release of an older work for it to be reexamined or, in some cases, looked at for the first time. Time influences the cultural landscape, and there are dozens of examples of works being critically appreciated decades after the fact as proof. Not only that, but your personal relationship with art and culture changes over time – what you appreciated when you were young, you might not appreciate when you’re older, or vice versa. I couldn’t stand [...]

I’ve struggled for about a year now over what to do with T-Sides. I started T-Sides at a time when music writing and journalism were changing. Not to say that they aren’t still changing, or aren’t always changing, but my decade or so pursuing a journalism career has been stretched across a serious shift in journalism. We probably should’ve expected the internet to be a bigger game changer, but I clearly wasn’t the only one who just kind of didn’t consider it. When I studied up for my BA in Print Journalism, that first word says it all – Print Journalism. There was one class in Online Journalism, and it was offered once a year at 8am. By the time I realized I should be taking an Online Journalism class, I was in my senior year, interning at Rolling Stone, commuting from Long Island to Manhattan a couple days a week, and not remotely interested in taking an 8am class. Instead, I made this blog, inspired by other music blogs, and hoping that my internship at Rolling Stone would be something worth writing home about — more like the MTV show (which they filmed a year later, and I did [...]

I told you we’re hungry. What, you didn’t believe me? Surely you believe me now, having defeated the reigning Super Bowl Champs in the most glorious, nail-biting, Seattle-like fashion. I’ve watched Marshawn Lynch’s half-dozen-tackle-breaking-67-yard-run at least 10 times since Saturday, and you know what? It never gets old. But then, the greatest feats in sports history seldom do. But the game was bigger than Lynch, bigger than the best performance we’ve seen out of Hasselbeck in god knows how long (Do we have Charlie Whitehurst, coming off that playoff-clinching victory, breathing down his neck to thank for that?), bigger than our record, whatever it was. It was about a team with a lot of heart. It was about the city that loves them, and how that love makes us so damn hungry. Hungry enough that we caused an earthquake cheering them on. It doesn’t get much hungrier than that. No one thought we could win. No one, that is, except us. We knew we could win. We really, really did: “Nobody believes in you but you and the people in this room,” safety Lawyer Milloy told his teammates in the locker room before the game. “If you want to be champions, [...]

My ears have been burning lately. No doubt so have Pete Carroll’s, Matt Hassellbeck’s, Charlie Whitehurst’s, and the ears belonging to every player on the Seattle Seahawks, and all of their fans, ever since the Seattle Seahawks became the losingest winning team in NFL history last Sunday night. With their victory over the St. Louis Rams, the Seahawks landed the NFC West Championship, and therefore a playoff berth, with a paltry 7-9 record. Needless to say, the response has widely been disbelief, mixed with joy or anger, depending on who you ask. We embrace the joy. And the anger? Yeah, we understand that. I grew up, primarily, a baseball fan, and thus, a Seattle Mariners fan. Sure, I have always been a Seahawks “fan,” but for my formative years I can’t claim to have paid much attention to them (and who can blame me). Increasingly, over the past years, it became hard to ignore how conveniently football filled the MLB off-season, how many family members, friends and potential dates loved the game and imparted their knowledge and enthusiasm, how much damn fun it was to scream at the screen, to partake in the event that is Watching The Super Bowl.
Alternately titled: How I got in to Two Sold Out Yeasayer Shows in New York City, A Tale of Happiness & Triumph One of the biggest challenges a music writer can face is writing about a band you adore. Sometimes you like something so much that the task of describing it is an overwhelming pressure. You want to do it justice, you don’t want to over-sell it, but you want to convey just what makes it so fantastic. Sometimes all that comes out of your mind is a jumble of generic positivity (which, if you ask me, is more the reason behind the hyperbolic tendencies of the blogosphere than anything else). This week, I attended my sixth and seventh Yeasayer shows – all within the past two years. I’ve seen the psych-pop-folk-rock outfit from Brooklyn more times than any other band in those years, and although they’ve completely shown-up every band they opened for (MGMT, the National, Man Man) or played with (Amazing Baby, Suckers), I only wrote about one of those shows. There’s a reason for this, and that reason is the challenge of describing what I like about Yeasayer in anything other than hyperbole. There’s also the fact [...]

I’m truly sorry T-Sides and all related projects have been offline for so long. Chalk it up to summer, chalk it up to a quarter-life crisis, chalk it up to any sorry excuse for life taking us away from the things we love that require any amount of work. But let’s turn the focus on the positives. I’ve certainly continued ingesting and thinking about all things culture-related, just find myself less able to capture the associated thoughts. So, here’s a showcase of Top 15 things that have been on the T-Sides radar while we’ve been dormant (not in order of preference, simply in the order of thought). Click the jump to see! 1. TV on the Radio Remixes – Read Silence Truth be told, remixes rarely appeal to me. A relationship with a song can be so personal, so intimate, that for it to be broken down into pieces and transformed can be like going to bed with someone you love and waking up next to a stranger. But holy hell, all three remixes on the Read Silence EP are breathtaking reinterpretations. The handy craft of Glitch Mob, Gang Gang Dance and Jneiro Jarel on these selections from Dear Science [...]
