By Davis McGraw I suck at keeping up with new releases, but I’m a sucker for show & tell. Here are five records that I heard in 2011 and deserve a good listen. 5. Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes: Havin’ A Party With Southside Johnny (1979) [Goodwill in Laconia, August] Johnny found his way into my collection near the end of a brief serendipitous streak, and for that I thank him. Much like the Boss, these boardwalk boys know their escapism back & forth. 4. Ry Cooder: Paris, Texas (1985) [Burlington Records, September] I remember watching Paris, Texas for the first time while anxiously communicating with two women via text, and even then the soundtrack demanded most of my attention. Has there ever been a truly bad Ry Cooder album? Once you’ve been in The Magic Band, I don’t think it’s allowed. Rest in Beef, Mr. van Vliet. 3. Frank & Jesse: Let It Come Down (2011) [USPS, June] Frank & Jesse are fronted by a guy named John Salvage who happened to play a pretty notable role in getting me out of my skull and onto the stage, so I’m fortunate enough to have great memories to accompany [...]

An overwhelming 27,000 people showed up to see David Byrne play a free show at the Prospect Park Bandshell in Brooklyn on Monday night. The show was the opening of the 2009 Celebrate Brooklyn concert series. Celebration was easily the theme of the night, whether you were celebrating the fact that it didn’t rain, the fact that you managed to actually get inside the bandshell (many were detoured by the long, snake-like line, which purportedly began just before 11am), or the fact that you were seeing a legendary performer for free (or the cost of your donation). The show’s focus was Byrne’s work with Eno, covering the Talking Heads’ three pivotal, mid-career albums, and their two collab LPs, 1981′s My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts, and last year’s Everything That Happens Will Happen Today, with the latter release unsurprisingly taking the most focus. (Which explains the absence of hits like “Psycho Killer,” “And She Was,” and “Road To Nowhere.”) Still, Byrne brought out some of the bigger Talking Heads players, all of which got the crowd going – “I Zimbra,” “Crosseyed & Painless,” “Once In A Lifetime,” “Burning Down The House” (See T-Sides video below!), “Life During Wartime,” and [...]

The webmistress has been a little preoccupied with looking for paying work, but I’m still out there, spreading the T-Sides love! Over on Popdose, I reviewed two albums that have a decent shot at making it to my year-end list: Neko Case’s Middle Cyclone, and the solo album from the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, Keep It Hid. I also stopped by the Contrast Podcast a couple weeks ago to talk about songs that offer advice. I’ll be on it again for this week’s episode, which has a theme of “Yes.” Any guesses for what I may have picked? And don’t forget to follow T-Sides on MySpace and Facebook! Metallica: “Wherever I May Roam” (download)

New York City living, with its ever-expanding list of options, presents a reoccurring problem: What to do when you need or want to be in two places at once? Given the opportunity to see both legendary crooner Morrissey at Webster Hall for free and up and coming hype bands the Grates and Micachu and the Shapes for free, what does one do? Well, if you have experience covering festivals like CMJ, and enough money for cab fare, you do both. Starting out at Webster Hall, the end of the set by openers the Courteeners was unsurprisingly Smiths-ish. At any other time and place, that might be perfectly fine, but as an opener for Morrissey? Who wants processed cheese when you can have cheddar? Morrissey warmed the crowd up, as has become standard, with a series of old video clips before his set. When the curtain dropped and the pompadoured singer took the stage, he asked, “I just have one soul searching question to ask you: Where the hell am I?” before jumping into Brooklyn bar dance favorite, “This Charming Man.” But, sadly enough, the same people that will likely bust a move to the song when it comes on at [...]

Image courtesy flickr user kernelslacker It would go against the trail-blazing spirit of Trent Reznor to use him as any sort of guideline, but it must be said that any arena rock band should turn to Reznor’s live show for inspiration. Every aspect of Sunday night’s show at the DCU Center in Worcester, MA was flawlessly executed, a well-conceived blend of the wants of both Reznor and his audience. Dubbed the Lights in the Sky Tour, after a track on his recent release, The Slip, Reznor took the name and applied the basic translation in a complex presentation. Combining his innovative tendencies, his fondness for the highly conceptual, and his costly production spending habits, Reznor turned to Moment Factory for a visually stunning, interactive design. The Montreal-based new media and entertainment company has an impressive list of unconventional clients that includes Cirque du Soleil. Primarily centered around three screens that could be raised and lowered, the lighting effects for the current Nine Inch Nails tour respond to either physical movement (a gap in television-like static that followed Reznor’s path along the stage in “Only”), or sonic movement, like giant versions of the iTunes Visualizer. During more tranquil moments, like the [...]

Anyone who was unsure as to what to expect from the Smashing Pumpkins’ performance at United Palace last Thursday surely had that question answered within the first few minutes. They started on time, and opened “Roctopus” with a Jimmy Chamberlin drum solo, after which erratic frontman Billy Corgan took the stage – in a dress. A big, layered, tulle dress, with a gold overcoat and a gold headdress resembling the sun. Although the show was billed as the Smashing Pumpkins, “Billy Corgan and band” would have been more appropriate. Even discounting the fact that other than Corgan, Chamberlin is the only original member that remains, Corgan’s backing ensemble was just kind of there. They were dressed in their black and white gothic formal wear of suits, dresses and corsets, while Corgan stuck out even in terms of clothing, wearing an all-white layered skirt and matching white “Zero” shirt. There’s been plenty of talk that the original line-up was more or less manufactured as part of an image while Corgan ran the show, and noticing that the band members physically resembled those they were replacing seemed to be testament to such gossip. If the show is going to be put in [...]

Of the many things that can be said about the performances of Dengue Fever and Rachid Taha at Central Park’s SummerStage, the biggest link between the two is a good performer’s ability to keep the audience entranced when they don’t speak the same language. Dengue Fever are American based, but to complement the group’s Cambodian pop-inspired surf-psych-rock, front-woman Chhom Nimol sings primarily in Cambodian – though they did perform “Tiger Phone Card,” one of two songs in English from their newest release, Venus on Earth. Dengue Fever: “Tiger Phone Card” (download) Their album is easily one of the best released in 2008 thus far, but their live show still tops it. Their SummerStage show wasn’t quite as mind-blowing as their show at Brooklyn’s Southpaw earlier this year (Indonesian beer specials = sorry, no review), but Dengue Fever are one of the most exciting, energetic and interactive bands currently performing. With constant smiles on their faces, they jump up and down, have special parts for audience sing-a-longs, and Nimol enchants with swirling hands and exotic dance moves. The group communicates through facial expressions and body language, like a group of longtime friends or even family. In a way, watching them feels [...]

Bullz-Eye: I attended the Eagles concert at Madison Square Garden as part of the Long Road to Eden tour. Read my review here. Popdose: 2008 has been a lackluster year thus far, but now that summer is approaching, the new release calendar is heating up. I reviewed Scarlett Johansson’s weirdo Tom Waits cover album here, the new Nine Inch Nails digital release, The Slip, the M83 ’80s throwback album, Saturdays=Youth, the HOT sophomore album from Chicago rap duo Kidz in the Hall, and the unfortunately mediocre French Kicks release.
Dirty Projectors are the kind of band that music writers drool over. Describing a band like the Dirty Projectors is a kind of challenge we’re all too eager to accept, encouraged by the unique quality of the music and our own egos, itching to be the one who “wrote it best.” It brings out hyperbolic terms destined to make music critic critics deliver tongue lashings of their own, no matter how hard we try and stay away from them. But how do you describe in layman’s terms that which is so far from the everyday? Dirty Projectors: “Depression” (download) David Longstreth was at his most Thurston Moore-looking, tall and lanky complete with bowl haircut and dark over-sized sweatshirt. He has those average 20-something indie rock looks that one in five guys in Brooklyn have – including a young man behind the counter at the Tea Lounge providing the wireless internet for this review. This somehow makes everything about the music even better. This is not an over-reaching, ostentatious attempt at stardom, this is a music nerd responding to music (in this case, Black Flag’s Damaged) the only way he knows how: with more music. Playing to a too drunk, too [...]
