Todd Haynes could not have chosen a more apt title for his Bob Dylan tribute film, I’m Not There. Dylan is not often found within the two hours and 25 minutes of the film: not in the character’s names, not in the soundtrack (the songs are covers), and only occasionally in the plot. As an ode to the legendary culture icon, Haynes achieves what he set out to do, but for those who expect insight into his convoluted character, it’s not there, either. Using six actors, Haynes tries to define different time periods, personalities and styles of the mythic singer-songwriter. No one acted poorly, but several of the story lines could have been left out and achieved much of the same result. Though Billy the Kid (Richard Gere) plays the most obvious part in representing lore and bizarreness in general, he sheds little light on either, and the oddity is played up in its contrast to the rest of the film, as it feels entirely out of place – it could be said to represent Dylan’s seclusion after his motorcycle accident, but that’s a reach. Its most notable quality belonged to the images and sounds of Jim James and Calexico, [...]

Martin Scorsese’s films haven’t especially impressed me in the past (though I’ve only seen three), but I do enjoy “The Last Waltz,” and his attempt at making a “Last Waltz”-esque film for the Rolling Stones in “Shine A Light,” could be interesting… here’s the trailer. It’s due out next year.

A large part of the increase in hits deserves thanks to the Hype Machine and jefitoblog. I also thank you. Yes, you, the person reading this right now. Thanks for visiting. I know I ramble and can be hard to follow, but I appreciate your support. Keep t-sides bookmarked, or on your RSS feed list — whatever your method, please read often, and spread the word.
When you’re reading any sort of non-fiction memoirs, articles in newspapers & magazines, blogs, it’s good to know where the writer is coming from. Having an idea of the author’s general tastes, opinions and areas of expertise make it easier for us to know how to interpret what they write. This all sounds very serious for an MP3 blog, I’m sure, but I am a print journalist at heart. So, for your reading and listening pleasure, I’ve documented a musical timeline of sorts for my life. “Indie cred”-wise, it’s probably more embarrassing than impressive, but I like it that way, and I think you will, too. The Music Man Our story begins around 1988/89, when I was four or five years old. I can’t recall exactly how the infatuation began, but I spent endless hours watching the musical The Music Man. It could’ve partly been Robert Preston’s smile and charm (something I’m admittedly still a sucker for in any guy), but really, it was the music. Unfortunately, this is the one portion of this musical history that I don’t have MP3s for , but anyone who’s seen the film surely remembers songs like “Ya Got Trouble” (“trouble with a capital [...]
